Sony held its latest State of Play today, and it showcased a bunch of incredible looking games and some...less than incredible ones.
While I wouldn't want to bore you with my thoughts on all of the games shown, I did want to give you some of my highlights from the presentation. I think there are some exciting games to look forward to.
Lumines Arise
Pragmata
A new IP from Capcom? Yes please! And damn does it look pretty captured on PS5 Pro. It's like space action with a little girl sidekick, which could get annoying, but seems fine in the trailer. I really like what I'm seeing so far and the action looks fun. Can't wait to see more.
Coming 2026.
Romeo Is A Dead Man
First thought? What TF is this?!? But the opening comic-style video turns awesome and the action looks stunning and brutally violent. I really really hope this one turns out to be great, but it looks like its off to a good start. It looks crazy as shit in the best way.
Coming 2026...maybe?
Silent Hill f
I've seen trailers for this one before. It's interesting that it has a completely different setting than other Silent Hill games, but I'm not sure how it will "feel" compared to other Silent Hill games to a Westerner. Like, will it feel like I'm playing a horror game based in Ninja Gaiden's village, or will it feel like a proper Silent Hill game. I might need to play it before I know for sure. One thing though, I'm a little mid on the way the graphics look. I think its more the artistic style than anything, but I think everything could look more realistic than it does. It has a strange, not quite cartoonish-looking vibe, but things look more stylized than real. It's hard to describe. For me, I'll wait to see more before deciding to pick it up. Luckily I won't have to wait too long to see how it reviews.
Coming September 25, 2025.
Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement
First impression? Holy crap this cut scene looks incredible. I hope the game looks this amazing. Then...the gameplay starts, and it's definitely not as impressive looking as the cutscenes. Reminds me a little of Bloodstained...oh wait! It IS Bloodstained. Well, I can forgive a little jankiness given how great the first one was. I'd like to see more, but for anyone who knows the first Bloodstained, or the Castlevania series, you know what you're getting into. I do wish the graphic fidelity was a bit sharper, but it's their fault for opening with such a great looking cutscene. If it had been more stylized like the actual game is, then I probably would have had my expectations properly set. Oh well. In any case, the first game was a banger and I have no reason to believe this one won't be incredible as well.
Coming 2026.
Ninja Gaiden Ragebound
We've all seen this game coming before, and I didn't see any gameplay in the video that unveiled anything amazing to me (it already looks amazing) but there were two things that stood out to me: 1) the soundtrack has some returning composers and it sounds like tunes from the original games (in fact the video had one of the classic tunes from the first Ninja Gaiden on the NES), and 2) we got a release date! It's coming soon, but it frankly can't come soon enough. I'm really hyped for this one.
Coming July 31, 2025.
Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection
Digital Eclipse? An arcade game? Wait...is that? MORTAL KOMBAT!!!! Holy hell. Holy F***ing hell! Digital Eclipse has done some of the best collections in recent history and I'm super excited to see their take on Mortal Kombat, especially if they bake in some historic content and behind the scenes videos and interviews. If it's nothing more than a way to play official versions of all the home versions that would be kool enough, but an Atari 50-style treatment would be really amazing. Maybe I'm hoping for too much, but we'll see when it gets here.
Coming later in 2025.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
I loved the original Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater on PlayStation 2, despite its clunky controls and the need to obsessively change camo to blend into the environment. Normally I wouldn't like something like that, but for some reason Snake Eater just clicked for me, and I really enjoyed sneaking and maxing out my camo to be as hidden as possible. The Delta remake is looking really good, but is it strange that I wish it looked just a tad better? I know I'm nitpicking, but personally I could have waited for something truly definitive, given how incredible the original was. I also wish they would have remade the first Metal Gear Solid first (and no, the Twin Snakes doesn't count), but I guess they're starting with Snake Eater. It IS the first chronologically, so maybe it makes sense from that perspective, and clearly they eliminated the number in the title, so perhaps they are planning to do remakes in chronological order or something like that. Who knows? In any case I'll certainly pick it up at some point, even if I don't right at launch.
Coming August 28, 2025.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls
ARC System Works? Marvel? Oh sh*t! A new fighting game? The visuals look amazing, with a unique comic-like look to them. And the animations and moves look incredible. For anyone unfamiliar, ARC System Works makes the Guilty Gear series of fighting games, so they are more than familiar with making incredible fighting games. I always loved the old Capcom Marvel fighting games (at least the two originals: X-Men and Marvel Super Heroes), and this one looks incredible. Can't wait to see more, and fingers crossed we see some Wolverine action in it as well.
Coming 2026.
They also showed an interesting behind-the-scenes video after the trailer, talking about how this game project came to be, between PlayStation, ARC and Marvel. It's worth a watch:
Recap
Well that's it for the June 4th State of Play. Overall it had some good stuff in it. There are always a few things that don't interest me, but there were enough wow factors in here and I'm very excited for some of these upcoming PS5 releases. I think Marvel Tokon was the overall best surprise for me, partially because it just looks tons of awesome, but also because it was completely unexpected. I really hope it turns out as great as it looks so far. It's certainly in good hands with ARC System Works.
